Vail Police: Partnering to Prevent Retail Theft

Community News

The Vail Police Department (Vail PD) recognizes the importance of our local businesses and is committed to working alongside them to combat retail theft. Recent incidents involving criminals using increasingly sophisticated tactics, such as distraction techniques, smash-and-grab robberies, and fraudulent rental vehicles, highlight the need for vigilance.

Strengthening Your Security Measures:

Vail PD encourages retailers to invest in security systems to deter theft and assist with investigations. This includes installing high-definition security cameras at key points throughout your store, such as entrances, exits, and high-value merchandise areas. Ensure these cameras are well-maintained and capture clear, high-resolution footage that can be used to identify suspects.

Responding Quickly to Suspicious Activity:

If you or your staff witness suspicious activity or a theft in progress, the most important action is to call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to apprehend the suspect yourself. When contacting the police, provide detailed descriptions of the suspects, including their physical appearance, clothing, and the direction they fled in.

Empowering Your Staff:

Employees are often the first line of defense against retail theft. Train your staff to be observant and recognize potential theft risks. This includes identifying suspicious behavior like lingering near exits, concealing merchandise, using multiple shopping bags, or large groups working together. Empower your staff to report any suspicious behavior promptly.

Maintaining Accurate Inventory Records:

Regularly conduct inventory and sales audits to identify any discrepancies. Maintaining accurate and detailed records, including item descriptions and timestamps, can be crucial evidence in the event of a theft. This information can help law enforcement track stolen goods and apprehend criminals.

Trust Your Gut:

Like your merchandize, your instincts are valuable. If something about a customer feels off, don't hesitate to reach out to the Vail Police. It's better to be vigilant than to become a victim of theft.

Together, We Can Make a Difference:

By working collaboratively, the Vail Police Department and local businesses can create a safer and more secure environment for everyone. We encourage open communication and prompt reporting of suspicious activity.
