The Role of Chambers of Commerce in Community Prosperity
In every thriving community, there exists an organization working behind the scenes to foster economic vitality, champion local businesses, and address community challenges: the local Chamber of Commerce. The results of a recent national survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), underscore the significance of chambers and their impact on communities across the country.
The survey reveals a remarkable statistic: 81% of U.S. adults view their local chamber of commerce as a trusted resource and partner for businesses. Trust, particularly in today’s polarized environment, is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Local chambers serve as the collective voice for businesses, advocating for policies that foster vitality, business growth, innovation, and sustainability. This is particularly resonant in Eagle County, where the Vail Valley Partnership has consistently strived to be a leader in promoting business vitality and addressing regional challenges.
One compelling insight from the survey is the direct link between chamber membership and a business's reputation. When consumers know a business is a chamber member, they are 64% more likely to purchase its goods or services and 63% more likely to recommend it to others. This demonstrates the chamber’s role as a seal of approval, assuring customers that member businesses are reputable and engaged in the community.
For businesses, this trust translates into tangible benefits. The survey also highlights that over 60% of business owners believe their chamber membership supports their business’s growth and prosperity. In the Vail Valley, we’ve seen firsthand how chamber members leverage their affiliation to strengthen their networks, build credibility, expand their reach, and take advantage of professional development opportunities for their employees.
Chambers of Commerce are more than business advocates—they catalyze broader community development. According to the survey, 76% of U.S. adults see their local chamber as a steward of a strong local economy, while 72% recognize their role in tackling community challenges. These statistics reinforce the value of chambers as bridges between public and private sectors, fostering partnerships that drive job creation, workforce development, and long-term community resilience.
Here in Eagle County, our chamber has played a pivotal role in initiatives that create jobs, attract visitors, support workforce housing solutions, increase air service, and grow transit opportunities. Such efforts underscore the impact chambers have on both economic and social spheres.
For businesses not yet involved, the message is clear: join your local chamber. Whether it’s networking, advocacy, or access to resources, chamber membership delivers value that extends beyond the bottom line. For community members, supporting chamber-led initiatives and patronizing member businesses helps reinforce the ecosystem that sustains local prosperity.
At the Vail Valley Partnership, we are proud to stand at the intersection of business and community. We are a catalyst for business growth, a convener of leaders and influencers, and a champion for a stronger community. We strengthen the community by supporting businesses, driving economic development, and fostering collaboration, ensuring Eagle County and our citizens can continue to thrive. The insights from this ACCE survey serve as a validation of the work chambers such as ours do every day—and a reminder of the opportunities ahead.
Let’s continue to build on this legacy and strengthen the ties that bind our businesses, leaders, and residents. The success of our chamber is inseparably tied to the success of the community we call home, and we couldn’t be prouder of the community we serve.
