Story of the Month|Vail Valley Theatre Company: Behind the Curtain
The Vail Valley Theatre Company (VVTC) has a wide and powerful impact on the community, far beyond the power of being entertained. Since 1987, the VVTC has been producing high quality theatre in the valley. But since Covid, VVTC has had a resurgence of energy, and they’ve added new community programming like Theatrical Dance Class, Improv Workshops, and Community Choir. Taken together VVTC is a strong positive force for the arts helping our community stay strong and resilient. There is a unique joy in working with a cast and production team to produce an experience that didn’t exist before. But its not only for performers – VVTC’s community offerings also encourage people who don’t want to be on stage and just love to dance or sing, or they want to stretch with improv.
In 2026, VVTC has announced their entire season, featuring 6 shows including the hit musical Rent, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and Reader’s Theatre version of A Christmas Carol. There will, be an Open Call Audition on February 7 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Eagle River Presbyterian Church in Avon. For more information go to vailtheatre.org
The Vail community is a unique collection of individuals who come here for similar reasons, but it’s such a transient place we’re lucky to have groups like the VVTC to hold things together. VVTC includes professional performers with Broadway experience to theatre lovers who may have been on stage or helped with sets and production in high school, or just always wanted to try. There’s really something for everyone and VVTC has been a strong connector for many. We asked some of the members how it has impacted their lives and the community.
Longtime member, Beth Kuntz, VVTC’s Artistic Director
“The Vail Valley Theatre Company has gone a long way toward making this valley feel like home to me. It has allowed me to continue to pursue my lifelong passion for theater. It has gifted me with close lifelong friendships, scores of wonderful memories and experiences, and loads of laughter. Friends that I have made through VVTC have become my second family here in the valley. There is nothing quite like working together as a team to create something extraordinary. There is pride and a sense of accomplishment in looking back and saying “we created that together”.

Recent newcomer to the valley, Julie Block
"I moved to the Vail Valley in 2024 and didn't know anyone. I wanted to get involved with the community and meet more people, so I decided to audition for my first musical in 10+ years, and I am so glad I did! Being a part of the cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was so much fun. Not only did I meet some amazing people who I can now call my friends, but I also rediscovered my love for musical theatre, and I can't wait to be involved in more productions in the future!"
Joe Pratt, part time visitor from Denver
“As someone who was an athlete in high school and college and went on to work on Wall Street, doing theater was not on my radar. Sure, I loved going, but acting…?
A few years ago, I spotted an audition notice from the VVTC for The Rocky Horror Show. I was retired by this point and had free time, so I figured I’d give it a shot - there was a non-singing part I thought I’d be suited for. I got the part, and the next thing I knew this former jock became one of the theatre kids!
The experience with that first VVTC show inspired me to take an acting class at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. I am now on my seventh class at DCPA. And in the ensuing years I have performed in six productions, including four with the VVTC. I continue to audition for other roles and have made theatre a regular part of my life.
VVTC has enabled me to stretch well out of my comfort zone (the idea of me singing and dancing onstage was once laughable) and engage in a wonderful new pursuit. I have learned a lot, and learned a lot about myself, along the way. I will be forever grateful to VVTC for giving me my first shot!”
Alex Brady, a musician, performer and now improv devotee
“I've been wanting to try improv since I moved to the valley a decade ago, but there was never a local opportunity to do it until Gina launched the Rocky Road Improv group. I've been going ever since, and it's been a great way to connect with the community over a good laugh. I even met my girlfriend Nikohl at one of the classes.”
Participants in VVTC Community Programming talk about even more profound effects and impacts to them personally and our community
“Many thanks for creating the theatrical chorus class series and providing such a wonderful community experience. It was so fun to sing with people and to benefit from Melinda's incredible expertise and teaching knowledge. The more I read about aging well and having life satisfaction, community and connection come up again and again, as well as choral singing!” and
“Your offerings are a gift to our community and I look forward to participating in more gatherings.”
and

“Thank you to all of the wonderful dance teachers who taught us the last 3 months at CMC. The classes were great fun and much needed!! I so appreciate all of you!!! Please pass the good word to the teachers! You connected me to joy and happiness!! (I'm recovering from great loss, an unexpected tragedy last April. You all truly lifted me, even if I couldn't express that in class...)”
I personally hadn’t done anything in theatre since college when my daughter asked me to be in Peter Pan with her when she was 8. Since then, I’ve been in more than 30 shows in the valley. With these kinds of impacts we truly hope VVTC will be around in the valley for the next 30 years and more.
