So you want to be an elected official?
New program offered to help prepare future community leaders
At Vail Valley Partnership, we are privileged to work alongside some of the brightest and most dedicated leaders in Eagle County and throughout Colorado—CEOs and top executives from across business, non-profit, and government sectors. Together, we bring diverse expertise and leadership to the table, addressing the complex challenges our state and nation face with a long-term, regional perspective.
As the world around us grows increasingly complex, so do the challenges facing our community. From housing affordability and environmental sustainability to economic development and infrastructure, we need informed, passionate, and committed individuals in leadership positions.
That’s where the importance of running for elected office comes into play.
Our community thrives when its residents engage, lead, and serve. Eagle County always prides itself on being a place where collaboration is key, where individuals across sectors work together to shape the future. It’s this spirit that the Leveraging Local Leaders (L3) program aims to harness and develop.
We often look to elected officials to provide leadership and direction on some of the most pressing issues facing our region. Local government is where real change happens. Decisions made by the county commissioner, town council, metro district, school board, and other local governance levels directly impact our daily lives. These positions shape policy on housing, transportation, education, environmental protection, energy, water, and much more.
Yet, many community members may shy away from running for office, believing they lack the experience or expertise. The truth is, being an elected official isn't about having all the answers—it's about being willing to listen, learn, and lead with integrity. It’s about making sure every voice in our community is heard. That’s precisely why programs like Leveraging Local Leaders are so critical.
The L3 program, spearheaded by the Vail Valley Partnership, is designed to develop and support individuals interested in running for office or simply becoming more active in community leadership. The goal? To create a pipeline of informed, engaged citizens who are ready to take on leadership roles, whether in elected positions or through board service and other forms of civic engagement.
The program focuses on providing participants with the skills and knowledge they need to make a difference. From understanding local government structures and processes to learning how to communicate and advocate for change effectively, L3 empowers its participants to step up and lead.
You might be reading this and thinking, "Me? An elected official?" If you care about your community, are willing to learn, and want to see positive change, the answer is a resounding yes.
Running for office isn’t just about politics—it's about shaping the future of your community.
Whether you’re passionate about housing, sustainability, education, or another issue, serving in an elected capacity gives you a seat at the table where those decisions are made.
The reality is our community can only move forward if more residents are willing to step up and lead. Programs like Leveraging Local Leaders provide the perfect launching pad for those ready to make a difference. Whether you're running for office or simply becoming more involved in civic life, now is the time to step up.
Running for elected office might seem daunting, but with the right support, it’s entirely possible. If you’re passionate about making a difference, now is the time to explore how you can serve your community in a leadership role. Together, we can cultivate a new generation of local leaders committed to shaping a better future for all of us.
