Consumer and business tips to ensure a safe holiday season

The holiday shopping season is in full swing. We have two pieces of advice: shop local when possible, and shop smart always. Why shop locally? It is important to support the many small businesses that are the backbone of our communities. Why shop smart? It will help ensure you have a safe holiday season.

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and the last-minute folks have just a few days remaining to finish their shopping. The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration for many, but it can also pose challenges for small retail businesses, especially when it comes to the increased risk of fraud. We (unfortunately) regularly see updates from local police and sheriff’s office and local retail businesses about stolen goods and retail theft.

That’s because as consumers flock to stores (and online platforms) to make their holiday season purchases, fraudsters see an opportunity to exploit vulnerabilities. With stores offering discounts across a variety of ‘must-haves’ for the holiday season, shoppers and businesses alike should be alert to the increased risk of counterfeit products that can spoil the festive cheer.

Some tips for shoppers:

Trust your instincts: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. So, if a deal or product seems off, it's best to keep away.

Prioritize secure payments: When shopping online, only buy from sites that begin with https:// — the 's' stands for secure. Also, check for a lock symbol in your browser to confirm the site's safety.

Examine every detail: Pay close attention to labels, packaging, and contents. Watch out for out-of-date perishable items, broken or missing safety seals, missing warranty information, or unusual packaging. These could all be signs of fake goods.

Protect your data: Keep all your devices, including computers and smartphones, updated with the latest cybersecurity protections to fend off any potential cyber threats. Stay alert to suspicious websites that could conceal harmful software.

Say something: Spread awareness among your friends, family, and coworkers about counterfeit goods. If you encounter a fake good, report it to CBP or the National IPR Center. Your actions can make shopping safer and smarter for all.

Some tips for local businesses:

Keep Inventory Secure: Retailers often experience a surge in foot traffic during the holidays, making it crucial to keep a close eye on inventory. Implement inventory tracking systems to quickly identify discrepancies and use surveillance cameras to monitor both customer and employee activities. This not only helps prevent fraud but also deters potential criminals.

Stay Informed about Common Scams: Fraudsters continuously develop new techniques to exploit vulnerabilities, and staying informed is key to prevention. Regularly update your staff on common scams and fraud tactics and encourage them to remain vigilant. Establish communication channels for employees to report suspicious incidents promptly.

Collaborate with Law Enforcement: Build strong relationships with local law enforcement agencies and collaborate with them to enhance security measures. Share information about potential threats and work together to create a safer shopping environment for both customers and staff.

The holiday season in the Vail Valley – and across the nation - is a lucrative time for small retail businesses, but it also brings an increased risk of fraud. By implementing fraud prevention and fostering a culture of security within your business, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of falling victim to fraudulent activities. Stay proactive, educate your staff, invest in secure technology, and prioritize the safety of your customers and your business during the holiday season – and year-round.
