Reflections on Eagle County Schools and Opportunities for our Students

VVP President's Post

As we enter the changing of seasons from a busy winter to a sure-to-be busy summer (and a quickly approaching summer break for our school-age students), I am reminded just how fortunate we are to have Eagle County Schools, our educators, and associated non-profits that serve the youth of our community.

The Eagle County School District website states their belief in providing a strong foundation of instruction that fosters creativity, compassion towards others, a passion for learning, and the courage to pursue one's dreams. The schools prepare our students to be successful in their career or college experiences while enabling them to contribute positively and effectively towards their communities.

And yes, they do these things – and do them quite well. From the busy corridors of elementary schools to the hectic halls of high schools, Eagle County's schools are hubs of enrichment filled with caring teachers, administrators, and coaches. Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in a plethora of extracurricular activities, from sports and athletics to music, drama, community service initiatives, and career exploration opportunities.

Career exploration is paramount, given the fact that Colorado’s job growth average is nearly double the national average. However, according to the 2020 Colorado Talent Pipeline Report, while 88% of new jobs in the state require a postsecondary degree, only 58% of Coloradans have a certificate, associate’s, bachelor’s, and/or professional degree. Of those earning bachelor’s degrees, two-thirds graduate with significant debt.

Additionally, Colorado is behind the national average in high school graduation with 82% of Colorado’s high school students graduating in four years, compared to a national average of 88%. The resulting skills gap limits opportunities for individuals and families as well as businesses. In fact, in a recent statewide survey conducted by Colorado Succeeds, 86% of Colorado’s employers said the skills gap is a threat to their businesses.

Eagle County Collaborative for Career Pathways, (ECCCP) a partnership between YouthPower365, Vail Valley Partnership, and Eagle County Schools, supports Eagle County youth grades 8-12 as they gain the knowledge, skills, and expertise necessary to obtain and sustain a quality career. ECCCP seeks to bridge the gap between education and employment, grow the number of students pursuing meaningful modern/non-college careers after school, and reduce gaps in the skilled workforce pipeline to feed into the local community.

It is important and we are making progress. However, high school is not just about planning for the future, it's also about giving students the ability to engage in activities and extracurriculars. Our kids are fortunate to have access to a wide range of opportunities, which allow them to learn, grow, and make a difference in their community. This struck me at the recent TedX Vail Youth program, which featured local kids who spoke, volunteered, and organized a fantastic event. It was truly inspiring to see the passion and dedication of these young individuals.

Dozens of clubs and activities are available ranging from speech & debate to drumline and from student council to theater. Of course, numerous sports programs are available each season for our kids to build camaraderie and learn teamwork and skills. Considering the size of our community, the range of options for our students is truly impressive.

One of the most valuable aspects of Eagle County Schools is the sense of community that is fostered there. Students are acknowledged, listened to, and appreciated for their distinct abilities and outlook on life. This is achieved through mentorship programs, peer support initiatives, and traditional school activities. We are fortunate to have Eagle County Schools and their leadership as an integral part of our community.
