Our Community Is Better Because of Leaders Like Phil Qualman and Beth Howard

VVP President's Post

Communities don’t move forward by accident. They are shaped, strengthened, and elevated by leaders who see what’s possible and then do the hard, often unglamorous work to make it real. In Eagle County, we’ve been fortunate to have more than our share of those leaders. And right now, as two of them step away from their formal roles, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on what their leadership has meant to all of us.

Philip Qualman and Beth Howard excelled in different fields - education and resort operations - yet both made Eagle County stronger, more connected, and future-ready.

For more than a decade, Phil has been at the heart of education in Eagle County. But his influence extended far beyond school walls. He understood something essential: that education is not an isolated system, but a cornerstone of a thriving community. Through his leadership, our schools became engines of opportunity, deeply connected to local employers, higher education, and the broader economy.

CareerX is just one example of Phil’s ability to bring people together and create lasting impact—students leave school equipped for life, while local businesses gain better-prepared employees. This is the result of purposeful, collaborative leadership.

Beth’s leadership at Vail Mountain reflects a different, but equally powerful, kind of impact. For years, she has helped guide one of the world's most iconic resorts, overseeing operations that touch nearly every visitor and employee experience on the mountain. That’s no small responsibility. It requires precision, resilience, and an ability to lead large teams through both bluebird days and the inevitable challenges that come with operating at scale in a mountain environment.

But Beth’s contributions go beyond operational excellence. She has been a steady, respected leader in a cornerstone industry that drives Eagle County’s economy. Tourism is not just about visitors. It’s about jobs, small businesses, and the overall vitality of our community. Under her leadership, Vail Mountain has continued to evolve while maintaining the high standards that define the brand and experience people expect.

What connects Phil and Beth is not the sectors in which they worked, but how they led. Both brought a rare combination of vision and practicality. Both understood that success is built on relationships, listening, collaborating, and empowering others. Both approached their roles with a sense of responsibility not only to their organizations, but also to the broader community.

They also share something else: humility. Neither sought the spotlight, but both earned deep respect from those who worked alongside them. Their leadership wasn’t about personal recognition, but about impact.

And that impact is lasting.

Phil leaves behind a school system more connected to its community and more aligned with the future of work. Beth leaves behind an operation and culture that will continue to shape the experience of Vail Mountain for years to come. Both have helped position Eagle County for continued success.

As they move on to their next chapters, it’s worth recognizing a simple truth: communities like ours don’t thrive without leaders like these. The kind who shows up, build bridges, solve problems, and leave things better than they found them. Their legacies are about more than programs or partnerships. Their legacy is about culture. Beth and Phil have shown that effective leadership combines strategic vision with a willingness to listen, collaborate, and inspire. They both leave behind a model of leadership grounded in purpose, integrity, and service.

Eagle County is stronger because of their contributions. And while we’ll feel their absence in their day-to-day roles, the systems they built, the people they developed, and the example they set will continue to guide us forward.

That’s the real measure of leadership. And it is worth celebrating.
