Celebrating our small businesses

Celebrating our small businesses

VVP President's Post

Successful businesses reflect a strong community

Small Business Month, celebrated in May every year, is a special tribute to celebrate small businesses, their courage, community efforts, and hard work. Did you know that small businesses are the backbone of Eagle County’s business community? It’s true: 80% of our businesses have fewer than 10 employees and 90% of our businesses have fewer than 20 employees. These small businesses that are the backbone of the economy and the heart of our community.

Entrepreneurship is on the rise in the United States. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of applications submitted to establish new businesses. Application numbers doubled in 2020 compared to previous years, and more than 5 million applications were filed in both 2021 and 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The statistics are impressive: 46% of Americans are employed by small businesses, there are 33.2 million small businesses operating in the U.S., and 5.5 million small business jobs have been created since 2020. Starting, growing, and maintaining a business requires hard work.

In our community, which is built by entrepreneurs and driven by free enterprise, small businesses play a crucial role in strengthening the local economy. These small business owners are our friends and neighbors, and they make significant contributions to the community while embodying the spirit of American innovation and entrepreneurship. The success of our small businesses is vital, as they form the fabric of our community.

The key to small business success, regardless of location or industry, is to develop and maintain strong relationships with customers and the community. In my experience working with business owners from various industries at the chamber, I've come to realize that a business owner's role is like that of a parent. Just like parents, business owners must nurture their companies (like children) with a clear voice and a strong value proposition to stand out. Both require long-term commitment and dedication. Just as parents nurture their children, business owners nurture their ventures. Both need attention, guidance, and support to flourish. Both demand a significant investment of time, energy, and resources.

Much like parents raising their children, I am continually inspired by the resilience, creativity, and impact of our local business owners running their businesses. Our businesses play a crucial role in building social capital and fostering a sense of belonging within the community. Local businesses invest in community initiatives, sponsor local events, and engage in philanthropic activities that address the unique needs and challenges of our resort community. By doing so, they not only contribute to the social and local culture but also strengthen social ties and promote civic engagement among residents.

We recently celebrated the Valley’s business community at the Annual Success Awards. The Success Awards recognize businesses and individuals throughout our region for their achievements and contributions. The awards celebrate excellence in various ways including entrepreneurship, innovation, customer service, and community impact. These award winners and nominees – a diverse cross-section of our community - showcase and honor the diverse talents and successes within the local community.

I am inspired by the passion, dedication, and resilience of our community. Our local businesses deserve our admiration and support for their invaluable contributions to economic development, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability within the Vail Valley. I believe that our business community helps create a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for us all. As we gear up for the summer season, I hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate our small businesses and their contributions to the community.
