Celebrating Colorado’s 150th and America’s 250th Anniversaries

VVP President's Post

Eagle County is a place where community, history, and a deep connection to our surroundings converge. In that spirit, I’m thrilled to share news about two anniversaries that are fast approaching and present a once-in-a-generation opportunity for us to reflect, celebrate, and shape the future: Colorado’s 150th anniversary of statehood in 2026 and the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence in 2026.

These milestones, known as Colorado 150/America 250, offer more than an excuse to throw a party. They’re a call to action for us as Coloradans and Americans to come together and ensure our history is honored, our communities are strengthened, and our shared values are carried forward.

The history of Eagle County is rich and multifaceted, from the Ute people who first called this land home to the miners, ranchers, and adventurers who laid the foundation for our modern communities. As we prepare to mark these anniversaries, we must take time to reflect on the stories that have shaped our state and nation—stories of resilience, innovation, and progress, but also of struggles and challenges that continue to demand our attention.

This is an opportunity to ask ourselves: How can we honor our past while ensuring a more inclusive and equitable future? How can we preserve the natural beauty and unique spirit of Eagle County while fostering economic growth and innovation?

Both Colorado 150 and America 250 will be defined by local engagement. Here in Eagle County, we have the chance to design celebrations that reflect our values and priorities. Think of a summer concert series featuring local musicians, community discussions about Eagle County’s contributions to Colorado’s growth, or history-focused events that bring our rich heritage to life.

It’s also an opportunity for our towns to collaborate. Events like the GoPro Mountain Games, Eagle County Fair & Rodeo, and our Oktoberfest celebrations show how our communities excel when we come together. These anniversaries could be a platform for new, creative partnerships that draw visitors while strengthening local ties.

One of the most exciting aspects of these anniversaries is the potential to involve young people. Eagle County Schools, nonprofits, and youth organizations can engage students through arts, history projects, civics education, and service opportunities that connect them to the broader story of our state and nation. These activities won’t just teach them about the past—they’ll inspire them to shape the future.

As Eagle County residents, we’re known for stepping up. I’m encouraging everyone—individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and government entities—to start thinking about how you can play a role in these celebrations. Whether it’s by hosting an event, sponsoring an initiative, or simply spreading the word, your participation matters.

To help guide this effort, the America 250 Foundation and History Colorado are providing resources, toolkits, and grants to empower communities like ours to create impactful programming. I urge you to visit the America 250 and Colorado 150 websites to learn more about how you can get involved.

Our state and nation have been shaped by ordinary people doing extraordinary things. From the pioneers of the past to the entrepreneurs, teachers, and advocates of today, we all have a role to play in writing the next chapter.

Eagle County, let’s seize this moment. Let’s celebrate our heritage, invest in our future, and show the world what makes our community and our people so extraordinary. Together, we can ensure that Colorado 150 and America 250 are not just milestones but springboards into the future, where we come together to bridge political and social fragmentation to create a brighter, more inclusive, and more connected future.
