A Legacy of Leadership

A Legacy of Leadership

VVP President's Post

Recognition and thanks to Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser for her contributions to Colorado Mountain College and our mountain region

True leadership isn't merely about managing an institution or an organization; it's about transforming it into a beacon of opportunity, innovation, and inclusivity. Over the past decade, Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser has exemplified this ethos at Colorado Mountain College (CMC), leaving an indelible mark on its trajectory and the mountain communities it serves. Dr. Hauser has recently announced that she will step down in August, and she will leave a true legacy of leadership.

It has been my pleasure and honor to work closely with CMC and with Dr. Hauser in a variety of capacities over the years. I have seen Carrie’s contributions first-hand, from serving on the original search committee for a new CMC president in 2013; working with her as a board member at Vail Valley Partnership; and in my current tenure as an elected trustee for CMC.

CMC has undergone remarkable evolution and expansion under President Hauser's leadership and guidance, positioning itself as a vital hub for education, economic growth, and social progress in our mountain communities. In reflecting upon her tenure, it's evident that her vision, dedication, and strategic acumen have been instrumental in shaping the college's remarkable journey with the addition of new programs, new facilities, and new communities.

Along these lines, one of Dr. Hauser's pivotal achievements lies in CMC's strategic investment and expansion into high-demand fields, including healthcare, environmental science and sustainability, teacher education, and business. By aligning curriculum offerings with the evolving needs of the workforce, she has empowered students to pursue their passions while equipping them with the skills necessary to thrive in today's competitive job market.

Dr. Hauser's foresight led to the introduction of bachelor's degrees in these areas, eliminating the need for students to seek education outside the region. This bold step not only retained local talent but also fostered a culture of academic excellence and achievement within the mountain region.

Dr. Hauser's commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in CMC's remarkable growth in Hispanic and Latino enrollment, which has nearly doubled over the past decade. By cultivating an environment where all students feel valued and supported, she has ensured that CMC reflects the rich tapestry of its surrounding communities. CMC has been named a Hispanic Serving Institution, opening grant funding that benefits all students.

Recognizing the pressing need for affordable housing, Dr. Hauser spearheaded initiatives to provide housing options for both students and employees, removing barriers to access and fostering a sense of belonging within the CMC family.

Additionally, Dr. Hauser's designation of CMC as a Dual Mission institution underscores her commitment to holistic education, blending liberal arts programs with hands-on career skills training. This innovative approach not only prepares students for the complexities of the modern world but also fosters a lifelong love of learning and inquiry.

Finally, under Dr. Hauser's stewardship, CMC achieved one of the highest Moody's ratings of any college or university in Colorado, a testament to her prudent financial management and unwavering commitment to excellence.

As Dr. Hauser concludes her tenure at Colorado Mountain College later this year, her legacy of leadership will endure as a testament to the transformative power of education. Through her vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to equity and excellence, she has not only elevated CMC to new heights but also empowered countless individuals to realize their fullest potential.

Thank you, Dr. Hauser, for your friendship and leadership. As we celebrate your contributions, we will also honor your legacy by continuing to build upon the foundation you have laid, both at CMC and throughout the central Rockies region.
