Would you enjoy making the single-track trails, park benches, and natural areas in Eagle your office space?  While your time will be split between field work and administrative duties, you will spend a large portion of your time outdoors maintaining trails and seasonal closures while educating the public on Open Space resource protection.  This newly budgeted position for 2025 serves as the eyes and ears for the Town’s Open Space, performing daily patrols and maintenance of trails, and natural areas. Rangers take on trails and natural spaces daily using various modes of transportation including foot, bicycle, bicycle, ATV, and vehicle patrol.  This highly public-facing position combines resource protection, public education, and regulation enforcement to ensure the preservation and enjoyment of Eagle’ treasured open spaces. Hiring Range: $26.04 – $31.25 hourly.  While the full pay range extends up to $36.45 hourly, final offer and placement within the range will be commensurate with experience.

Job Term:  Budgeted for three years (2025 through 2027) with potential for extension.

What You'll Do

As our Open Space Ranger & Maintenance Specialist, you'll wear multiple hats and handle diverse responsibilities including:

  • Serve as the friendly first point of contact to ensure compliance with the applicable provisions of the Eagle Municipal Code for open space properties, trails, select parks, and the golf course (during the winter season only)
  • Perform and oversee maintenance of open space properties and trails
  • Plan and implement trail rehabilitation and construction projects
  • Monitor and document wildlife activity, trail conditions, and ecological changes
  • Coordinates volunteer crews for maintenance projects
  • Implements Leave No Trace principles and promote trail etiquette
  • Supports special events on open space properties

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum: High School diploma with 3+ years relevant experience, OR
  • Associate's degree in natural resource management, natural sciences, parks and recreation management, criminal justice, or related field with 1-2 years in parks, natural resource management, law enforcement, or related field
  • Valid driver's license
  • Excellence in customer service, communication and conflict resolution
  • Detail-oriented mindset with strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-4 years of experience working in law enforcement, code enforcement, natural resource management, open space ranger, trails, parks, outdoor recreation, or similar areas.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. 
  • Ability to drive vehicles and ATVs through rough terrain.
  • Ability to operate a mountain bike and e-mountain bike. 
  • Ability to use cross-country skis and/or alpine touring gear. 
  • Ability to operate light equipment, such as a tool cat and skid-steer, ATV’s bicycles, ATV trailer.
  • Chainsaw certified, or willingness to become certified. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook), Google Earth, GIS, and other GPS applications. 
  • Familiarity with natural resources issues in Eagle or mountain environments.
  • Familiarity with noxious weeds and noxious weed management.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking Skills

Position Type: 

  • This full-time, benefits-eligible position averages 40 hours per week. Regular on-site attendance is essential, but schedule flexibility is supported. Non-traditional hours, including day, evening, morning, and weekend shifts, may be required based on business needs and seasonal program demands.
  • May be expected to attend evening committee meetings, special work sessions, and may assist with some evening and weekend events.
